I thought about this for a while, then decided to get to work on it and pay my cards off. Didn't actually take me all too long and my balance was zero on all cards. I waited a week for good measure, then placed the phone call of which i had no idea how it might end. First and foremost, never forget that the individual answering the phone, is just that. An individual. Treat them as such. They are people setting out to perform a customer service job. Most companies that have help desk employees are graded on their performance, one of these parameters is customer service and efficiency, paired with a quota of positive call resolution. Bottom line, they have vested interest in you being a happy customer, one that ideally gets his interest rate lowered. When I called, i explained my situation, that the cards are paid off, that i've been with them for quite some years, that i've never been late or overdrawn and that i'd really appreciate him working with me and helping me reduce my interest rate. The response what so friendly that it almost sounded fake and after a few minutes, including the usual reading of statutes, the interest was lowered to 12%. Not bad for a few minutes on the phone i might add. Granted, i've put my work in first, paid the cards off in full, have had other very helpful parameters in place, such as never having been late or overdrawn. Others may not be in the same situation, but have felt the full effects of our current economics. Many are dealing with job loss or a job where they're underpaid. This is all the more a reason to make that call. While you may have been late or overdrawn, get a few payments in that are current, show your willingness to "play ball" with the credit card company and if you treat the individual on the phone with courtesy, the favor will most likely be returned. However, should the person on the phone be less than cooperative, just tell them "it's ok, no worries", hang up and call back. The odds that you get the same customer service rep on the phone are slim at best. Go for it, develop your strategy, then get yourself that better interest rate. It worked for me, many of my friends, it's surely going to work for you. GMJ Trackback(0)
